It’s a Grand Ol’ Flag

Have you been a little reticent, lately, when it comes time to sing “The Star Spangled Banner” or to pledge allegiance to the flag of The United States of America.  I can’t say that I have.  But, I have noticed that discomfort among others.  Some of whom, I hold in the highest regard.  Are they unpatriotic?  I don’t think so!  They may, like me, be gravely troubled by what has been done in the name of the Grand Ol’ Flag.  They may be alarmed at what some, who wrap themselves up in the Grand Ol’ Flag, are doing under guise of being patriotic.  Clearly, many of the liberties that I associate with the Grand Ol’ Flag are under assault, and from the very people who have sworn to uphold them.

That said, it’s still a Grand Ol’ Flag!  It’s age and its stature are the very things that I am willing to pledge allegiance to and to celebrate in song.  The Flag is Grand because it stands for an idea much larger than any individual or current government.  It is Grand because it stands, also, for what is the very best about that idea: that all men are created equal with the right bestowed by their Creator to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  That is a Grand idea, worthy of every ounce of strength, intellect and energy we can devote to its preservation and advancement.   In the United States of America we do have a government of ideas, not of men.  That idea is worthy of my patriotism.

It is an idea that is quite old.  The current iteration may be a youthful two centuries old.  But, the Grand Ol’ Flag stands on the shoulders of all the proponents of liberty from the ancients to the present.

It is a Grand Ol’ Flag and I am proud to be a citizen of the Republic for which it stands.  When I say my Pledge or celebrate by singing the song, it is that idea that I honor.  My Flag is older and grander and stronger than any transient current event or politician.  The Grand Ol’ Flag stands transcendent.

So strike up the band,  sing “The Star Spangled Banner”,salute the Grand Ol’ Flag and say the Pledge of Allegiance.

You’re a Grand Old Flag

by George M. Cohan

You’re a grand old flag,
You’re a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You’re the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
Ev’ry heart beats true
‘neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there’s never a boast or brag.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

You’re a grand old flag,
You’re a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You’re the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
Ev’ry heart beats true
‘neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there’s never a boast or brag.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.
