An Ode to Pi

March 14th, 2008

Yes, folks!!!!!!!  It’s March 14th (3.14), Pi Day.  The very best hour to celebrate Pi Day is at 1:59:26 am.  The next best, is that same hour of the pm.  Whatever hour you choose, I recommend that you celebrate Pi Day by having some square Pi.

Pi is the perfect number. Yes, I know it’s an irrational number.  To some, that might imply that it should not be held out as perfect.  To me, that is the characteristic that makes it perfect.  Think about it.  If Pi were rational, then it would either reach a final digit of 0 or repeat a sequence of numbers.  We have calculated Pi to something like 5,000,000 places to the right of the decimal.  It never hits 0 and it never repeats.  If it ever did, that would create a boundary condition in a circle.  There would be a gap.  It would be like having a flat tire on the universe.

So, today take a moment to honor Pi, the perfect number, and to be especially thoughtful of the geeks and the nerds among us.  I’ll take all the love I can get.
